Background

I began my education in the field of Social Work, with a focus in mental health at the University of Toronto where I completed my M.S.W. in 2007. Furthering my education, I pursued post-graduate education in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) from Wilfrid Laurier University. Much of my early work in this field was in developmental services, where I became passionate about supporting families as they adapt to very challenging life circumstances. This work profoundly informs my understanding of stress, self-development, and the work of healing and growth in family relationships. In 2009/2010, I worked abroad in Scotland and continued on my quest for life long learning, and completed a counselling and psychotherapy post graduate certificate. I met the love of my life in Scotland, and we settled here in Waterloo County, where we have made our home.

My Practice

I understand and honour the uniqueness of every individual, and utilize a person-centered, strengths-based approach. In addition to my CBT knowledge and experience, which as an evidence-based approach, can have dramatic positive outcomes on day to day functioning, I also draw from a more broad array of experiential and theoretical practices. Some of these are: dialectical behaviour therapy, narrative therapy, mindfulness, self-compassion and solution focused counselling. My work with clients is informed by both an attachment perspective and a family systems approach. I tailor my interventions to suit individual needs, understanding that the relationship between therapist and client is paramount to effective outcomes. I have experience providing therapeutic counselling to children, youth, adults, couples and families experiencing a variety of presenting problems including:

I am motivated to support my clients in effecting change in their lives, so that they are more fully engaged in their relationships, and the life they want to be living. I utilize the same CBT skills which I love to teach, and nurture my own emotional and physical well being through connecting with nature, nurturing my relationships, and playing with my children at every opportunity.
